I was asked to take a look at Check Them, which purports to be a people search engine. It's US only and covers all 50 states. However, it left quite a nasty taste in my mouth, since the whole engine was based on fear. The emphasis was, as the name suggests, all about checking people out, to see if they have been divorced, have criminal records, financial details and so on. The testimonies were all from people who had found out unpleasant things about a new love interest, daughters boyfriend and so on. This is an example of some of the stuff that comes up when you run a search:
Of course, before you can see all of this information you have to pay, but you were expecting that weren't you? Perhaps it's just a cultural thing, but the whole thing seemed to be about fear; there were references to 'secret lives' which I thought were entirely unnecessary. The opposite side of the coin of course is that this information is freely available, and it makes sense to check out someone before going out with them and so on. It's a take it or leave it engine, and personally, I'm going to leave it.
