Link: No Yahoo Directory Links on New Yahoo Homepage?. Interesting article from Search Engine Journal relating to the new Yahoo! layout. Apparently, although it's a nice new sleek design, they've dropped the link to their directory, the very thing that brought them to prominance all those years ago. I can't say that I'm surprised to be honest... everytime there's a Yahoo! home page update the directory option gets smaller and smaller and hidden away in ever darker corners. I think this is a real shame. While free text searching is obviously what most of us use for most of the time, it can still be a help to be able to look through a directory structure for ideas on searching, help in subject areas that we don't know well, or simply for an overview of a subject.
I don't regard this as a step forward at all... much more of a step back, giving people less functionality, not more.
