If you want to keep people up to date, you might want to look at loopnote.com. This is a resource that allows you to create an alerting service about a particular subject and then friends and colleagues can subscribe via RSS, email, text or Instant Message. As soon as anything new is posted to your alerting service, everyone knows about it really quickly.
Ideally any notifications should be less than 100 characters, though there is an option available for adding files and other content, but the idea is short and sweet. It's a nice idea - I particularly like the variety of ways they're providing for keeping up to date. Lots of ways that it could be used as well - details on your favourite soccer team, band details, restaurant specials, daily offers and so on. It's a nice idea.
