Thanks to DzineBlog for this list, which I've gone through and added to slightly. I searched for the tag 'apple' simply to give some indication of the size of databases. Some sites provided very explicit details on what could be done with images, others virtually nothing. Most gave some indication of size of images and so on, but not all.
Aboutpixel is a German language search engine which did retrieve 30 apple images. Registration needed.
Banco de Imagene is a Spanish engine, so I didn't really get anything for apples, which is fair enough. Images can be downloaded without registration, and the license is in Spanish, which isn't too helpful.
Blue Vertigo has no images themselves, but does link to hundreds of other resources, but scrolling across the screen is annoying!
Design Packs provides access to packs of images which can be downloaded in themes. Licensing is quite strict though.
DexHaus was slow to search, and I found the interface confusion. Downloading was disabled, so Registration is going to be required for this one I believe. No apple images that I could find.
Digital Dreamer has a category approach, no search option. Download via copy, apparently no restrictions on use.
Dreamstime has free and priced images. 25 apple photographs. Register in order to download.
Everystockphoto has over 12,000 apple tagged images, and the ones I looked at all seemed on topic. Download without registration, licence options listed.
FontPlay has virtually no restriction on what you can do with the images on the site. No search option other than browse categories. Download is via copy.
Free Digital Photos has 24 apple images and the license is attribution, no resale and so on. Very reasonable.
FreeFoto has 138 apple images, and very varied they are as well. On-line images are covered by the Creative Commons license for non-commercial, no derivatives, attribution license, and you have to provide your email address prior to downloading watermark free images.
Free Photos Bank has a free text search option as well as categories. It has about 200 apple images and they can be downloaded without registration. It wasn't clear as to what the licensing arrangements are.
Free Picture Click didn't have many images - less than 1,000, arranged by category. Download is via copy, and no indication of license.
Image*After had 24 apple images, and lots of categories to browse through. Download without registration, license is very simple and liberal.
Microshots is another specific resource, restricting itself to close up photography. Search is browsing by category (only 700+ images, so no problem there) and download is by copy. Licensing is simple (don't use our images to compete with us) and flexible.
Morgue File is an engine that I've used before and it's good quality. It has an advanced search function, which returned over 400 apple tagged photographs. Registration isn't necessary.
Nations Illustrated is an image search engine that's focused on geographic images, so there were no apple images. Search is via search box or region. Registration needed.
Open Photo provides a category approach as well as search. 25 apple pictures, registration needed, and priced to download high resolution versions.
Photocase is free, and you have 3 download credits per week if you register. You can buy more or put your own photographs up to get credits. Apple found 11 results, 6 of which were on target results.
Photogen is an 8 apple search resource. Category approach as well as free text search, but registration required to download.
Pixel Gallery is another German language engine. 1 apple image. Download without registration, and no sign of licensing, though to be fair it could easily be in German, and I wouldn't recognise it.
Pixelio is a German language engine with 60+ apple images, many of them being the computer type, which is unusual. Annoying popup adverts over the images and I suspect registration is necessary in order to download, since that wasn't an option available to me.
Pixel Perfect Digital is more of a magazine site, and the image search is provided by Dreamstime.
Stock.xchng is a site that I've mentioned before and it works well. Over 1,000 apple pictures and all the first 20 were on topic. It's got a good search function, advanced search, categories and so on.
Stock Vault provides categories, premium photographs, only 26 apple images though. Downloading is easy, and all images are Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License.
Studio 25 is being redesigned. 1 apple image, no restrictions on use that I could see.
Turbo Photo has 2,000+ images available in 20 categories, 63 images are of apple. This resource does appear to only offer sale of images however, not free ones.
Vintage pixels has a large database of historical, high quality, free-for-use images. Category and date search option, registration needed to download images.
Woophy has 293 images of apples, and it's strong on social interaction, with details on where the photographers are, comments, favourites and so on. It didn't appear immediately obvious as to how to download images or what you were allowed to do with them.
9x13 is a German language engine, arranging images by country. No indication of licensing, and download seems to be via copy.
