OK, picture a social network. Down the left you have your circles, links, groups, what have you. In the middle you have your news stream. At the top there's a box to add in 'What's on your mind'. To the right is a list of contacts, an invite option, and other general stuff. That's well - it's Facebook isn't it. Except that in this case it's not, it's Diaspora. The new social network. Yes, I know. Don't even go there. Just. Don't. This is what it looks like:
Facebook by another name? I'd love to be enthusiastic, really I would. But to be honest, I'm pretty much at overload for these things. If I'm going to escape from the evil clutches of Facebook, I'm tempted to walk across the road to Satan HQ and start using Google+. I shouldn't, and I should welcome a chance to start afresh, but really, is it worth while? Best thing - it's very quiet. Peaceful. No games, no constantly changing privacy settings. Rather like a work building on a bank holiday if you get my drift.
It's nice - there's nothing wrong with it, and a few years back I'd have been raving. But as it is, I think I'm at social network overload - I don't think we need another general one. However, if you'd like to have a look around, kick the tyres and so on, let me know in the comments field, with your email address and I'll send you an invite. (Won't publish the comment, your email addy is safe!) Or just comment and tell me what you think - hopefully you'll be less cynical and jaded than I am!
Thanks for the kind words, Phil. We hope we can persuade you to change your mind... ;)

Nice to know you tried Phil. I recognize the Social Network fatigue, but just because of that I turn more and more to Diaspora. (Knowing that I can publish to FB and Twitter from Diaspora probably have something to do with that). It is as you say quiet, both visually and update-wise. It feels like a fresh start and maybe something new. We´ll see... :-)
