I've been playing around with a new search engine called Polyfetch. It's actually really quite interesting, and worth a few minutes of your precious time in order to take a walk around it and kick the metaphorical tyres.
To start with, it's a straightforward search engine, with a rich variety of features. You have websearch, comparisons, shopping, maps and images. No advanced search, news or multimedia unfortunately. The results page is interesting - you get the normal results in the format that you'd expect, with title, summary and URL. There's also an image, which is pulled from somewhere on the page, which can be quite interesting in and of itself. However, there are a number of filters that you can try out with the results that you have. The default is to show all results, but you can limit to what is currently popular (which may or may not be new information), reviews, positive and negative information, 'how to' options and the last filter is 'funny'.
The comparison search allows users to compare different things - products, football clubs, celebrities and so on, and gives a score out of 100 relating to positive mentions. Not quite so sure about this aspect, since it's going to rely on the written word, which is dodgy at best, but it's worth a look. Shopping is what you'd expect, with various sub groups such as Home or Electronics. The maps option allows you to choose a location, and then type in a search, and Polyfetch uses Yelp to try and identify appropriate resources. The images option is pretty much what you'd expect, although you only get a fairly miserly 18 images or thereabouts per page.
One other option that I liked about the search engine was that it was possible to keep a list of bookmarked sites together using their bookmarklet, and then launch them later, in one go, on any device. Really helpful if you're doing some research or comparisons and want to get access to a bunch of sites quickly and effectively.
