It really is the kiss of death when Google shows an interest. I really liked Panoramio, which if you haven't visited it (and little point now) was a great place to upload photographs of specific places, and to see what else had been uploaded for a place that you were going to visit. It's been around for a few years, but Google has decided to close it since it wants to improve photo-sharing experiences directly inside Google Maps. You can for example become a 'Local guide' and add photographs that you have taken for a place to the maps. Apparently this can win you points, for reasons that I can't really explain. <Pause> Oh, I can get the opportunity of going to Google events. Exciting, huh? What's really annoying me is that I'm supposed to be able to add photographs to Google maps, by finding a place and then clicking on 'Add a photo' except that I can't find any such option available to me. It would be really helpful if Google could actually do a video on this, but that's clearly beyond their abilities.
Seriously Google, leave stuff that works alone. We don't need you to come in and mess it up.
